There is a specific kind of promise made about AI in creative and product work: that it will handle the repetitive parts so you can focus on the thinking. After six months of integrating Claude Code into every phase of a product design project, from initial scoping through final handoff, the honest picture is more nuanced. The promise is partially true. The parts it gets right are significant. The parts it gets wrong are instructive.
Scoping: from ambiguity to structured requirements
The first phase where Claude Code proved genuinely useful was scoping. Given a project brief (even a rough, conversational one), Claude Code can produce a structured requirements document: user flows, edge cases, open questions, a rough component inventory. This is not a replacement for stakeholder conversations, but it accelerates the work that comes after those conversations. The output gives everyone a concrete artifact to disagree with, which is much more productive than working from a vague shared understanding.
User flow diagrams were a specific win. Describing a user journey in natural language and getting back a structured flow in Mermaid syntax, which could then be rendered and refined, compressed a task that used to take a full design session into about twenty minutes. The diagrams weren't perfect in the first pass, but they were complete enough to be useful, and the iteration cycle was fast.
Design: reading Figma, producing component code
With the Figma MCP in place, Claude Code can read design files and produce component code. This worked well for atomic components where the design intent was clear from the file structure. Buttons, form elements, typographic components, spacing utilities: these were implemented with high fidelity in early passes. The translation work that used to sit between design and engineering, the back-and-forth about exact values, the corrections, the re-reviews, was largely eliminated for these elements.
More complex components required explicit description. Navigation systems, dashboard layouts, and modal hierarchies needed prompts that went beyond "implement this component" to describe the behavior, the responsive breakpoints, and the interaction logic in specific terms. This is where the designer's ability to communicate precisely becomes the binding constraint. The model executes well against clear specifications. Against vague ones, it produces something plausible-looking that doesn't actually solve the problem.
Prototyping: functional apps in hours
This is the phase where the acceleration is most dramatic and most visible. Deploying a functional prototype to Vercel, one that a stakeholder can open on their phone and interact with in a meeting, used to be a meaningful time investment. It is now a task that fits inside a working afternoon. This changes the economics of prototyping entirely.
The implication is not just faster iteration. It is a different quality of feedback. A stakeholder interacting with a real interface on their device responds differently than one looking at a Figma presentation. They tap things, they misread things, they expect behaviors that weren't specified. That contact with reality produces information that no amount of design review produces. Getting there faster, earlier in the process, with less sunk cost, is a structural improvement to how design decisions get validated.
The prototypes built during this six-month period ran on React and Next.js with Tailwind CSS. The consistency of the stack mattered: Claude Code produces more reliable, more idiomatic code for a stack it has deep familiarity with. Switching frameworks mid-project introduces noise that costs more than it saves.
Documentation: specs, handoff materials, changelogs
Technical documentation is the phase where AI assistance is most straightforwardly useful and least likely to produce subtle errors. Generating component specs from a design file, producing handoff notes for engineering, writing changelog entries: these are tasks where the output can be verified quickly and where the cost of a first-pass draft being imperfect is low. Claude Code handles all of these well.
What it does not handle well is documentation that requires interpretive judgment: explaining why a design decision was made, capturing the tradeoffs that were considered and rejected, describing the intent behind a system rather than its mechanics. That content has to be written by the designer, because it reflects decisions that were made through a process the AI was not present for. The distinction matters, because handoff documentation that captures the "what" without the "why" tends to get ignored or misapplied downstream.
The friction points that don't go away
Ambiguous instructions produce ambiguous results. This is not a criticism of the tool: it is a description of how language works. A prompt that says "make this more engaging" produces an output that is different from intended in ways that are difficult to debug, because the instruction itself didn't specify what "engaging" means in this context. The six-month experience made it clear that precision in instruction is not a skill you can skip. If anything, AI-assisted workflows demand more precision than human-to-human workflows, because a human engineer will ask for clarification when something is unclear, while the model will produce a plausible-looking interpretation and move forward.
The designer's posture shifts as a result. The job is less about producing the artifact directly and more about orchestrating a production pipeline: writing clear instructions, evaluating output against a specific standard, deciding what to iterate and what to accept, managing the context that the model holds across a session. This is a meaningful cognitive shift. It is also a more leveraged position: when it works, one person produces what used to require a team. When it doesn't work, the failure mode is usually a prompt that needed more precision, not a tool that failed.
What six months actually changes
The honest summary is this: Claude Code integrated across a full project lifecycle accelerates the phases where the work is well-defined and the specifications are clear. Scoping documents, component implementation, prototype deployment, technical documentation: all of these move significantly faster. The phases that require interpretive judgment, strategic decisions, and communication of design intent don't accelerate, but they benefit from having cleaner, faster artifacts to work from.
The designer who works this way over six months develops a different set of instincts. They become better at framing problems precisely, because the cost of imprecision is immediate and concrete. They become more focused on the decisions that actually matter, because the decisions that don't matter get handled by the pipeline. And they develop a clearer sense of where AI assistance genuinely adds value and where it produces the appearance of progress without the substance. That last instinct is probably the most valuable thing the six months produced.
